Cars are one of the most expensive things you will ever buy. That’s why most drivers keep their vehicles for seven years or more. I’m glad so many people people love their cars enough to stay in a long-term relationship with them, but there comes a time when it’s best to move on. Here are six signs you need to buy a new car.

1. Several mechanics have tried (and failed) to fix the same thing.

Your engine makes a funny noise. You take it to the mechanic. They fix it. A few days later, your engine starts making that same noise again. Your mechanic shrugs and refers you to someone more experienced. They fix it (again) and your car breaks down (again). If you find yourself trapped in this vicious cycle, it’s probably time to buy a new car.

2. The repair costs almost as much money as your car is worth.

Your mechanic gives you a price quote. It’s so high that you feel like you’re getting scammed. You go to another mechanic, who quotes a price that’s even higher. Uh-oh. No one’s taking advantage of you. It’s just a really complicated repair! If it costs more than your car is worth, you might as well count your losses and buy a new car.

3. Your car is becoming unsafe and unreliable.

Your car makes jerky motions that scare your passengers. “Don’t worry, it does that sometimes,” you say. That doesn’t make them feel any better. If this is a common event, then you should probably buy a new car ASAP.

4. Gas is getting ridiculously expensive.

You get a new job (or your current job asks you to relocate). This causes your commute to double or triple in length. You’re happy for the new opportunity, but the gas cost is starting to add up. Do the math. If your monthly gas bill is almost as high as a car payment, then it might be smart to buy a new car that is more fuel efficient.

5. There’s a new baby in the family.

Your performance vehicle is super cool, but it’s probably not the best option for a family. If you’ve got kids on the way, then you might want to buy a new car (hint: be a grown-up… trade the race-car for a mini-van!).

6. You’re just plain sick of it.

Your car has treated you well, but it’s starting to feel stale. There’s nothing wrong with that. As long as you’ve got the budget, it’s okay to buy a new car for no other reason than: “I feel like it!”
